Estate Stamp Signed Andy Warhol Flowers: Master American Contemporaries II Silkscreen

    Excellent
A silkscreen on etched aluminum stamp signed by the estate of Andy Warhol. This piece is entitled "Flowers: Master American Contemporaries II" and was created in 1994 in a small edition of 50. This was printed and published by American Image Editions.

Born in Pittsburgh in 1928 as Andrew Warhola, Andy Warhol came to represent more than just the American condition. He became pivotal in the evolution of artistic production in relationship to mainstream mass-produced culture and commercialism. The founder and most influential figure of the Pop Art movement, Warhol received his training in graphic design from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949. He then moved to New York City to begin his career as a commercial artist where he gained phenomenal success. By 1955, Warhol was the most successful and most-influential commercial artist in New York. In the late 1960s, Warhol experimented with the medium of film exploring such rhetorical topics as time, boredom, and repetition. He founded inter/VIEW magazine in 1969 (later changed to Interview in 1971), published 'The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again' and continued to produce silkscreens until his death in 1987.

Signed Alex Katz Limited Edition Pas De Deux III - Francesco And Alba Clemente Silkscreen

    Excellent
A silkscreen of Francesco and Alba Clemente by pop portraitist, Alex Katz from his "Pas de Deux" suite depicting famous couples. This print is signed by the artist in pencil, lower left and numbered in pencil, lower right.

Alex Katz is a leading figure painter of the new realism movement in contemporary art. He is best known for his realistic portraits of friends and family, notable for their relaxed attitudes and uncomplicated bearing. Katz was born in New York City, and studied art at the Cooper Union from 1945 to 1949. In the late 1950s, he found himself among a growing number of artists dissatisfied with the then-dominant stream of abstract expressionism, with its emphasis on formal abstraction. A summer resident of Lincolnville, Maine since 1954, he has developed a close relationship with local Colby College. The college presented him with an honorary doctorate in 1984. In October 1996, the Colby College Museum of Art opened a wing dedicated to Katz that features more than 400 oil paintings, collages, and prints donated by the artist.

Francesco Clemente is an Italian painter. His work shows both surrealist and expressionist references. He was self taught and studied architecture in 1970 at the University of Rome. He did some paintings in collaboration with Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat in the 1980s. Since 1982, he has spent his time between Italy, New York City and Madras (now Chennai) in India, where he collaborates with local artists. In 1986, he created the Hanuman Books series with Raymond Foye, which is a collection of 48 miniature handmade books featuring American and European poets and philosophers, edited by George Scrivani and printed in Madras. Clemente is a member of American Academy of Arts and Letters. He still regularly works in India and lives in New York with his wife Alba and their four children.

  4. Signed Donald Sultan Limited Edition Black And Red April 25, 2007 Silkscreen With Flocking

Signed Donald Sultan Limited Edition Black And Red April 25, 2007 Silkscreen With Flocking

    Excellent
A silkscreen with flocking by the great printmaker and pop artist Donald Sultan. This piece is entitled "Black and Red" and is dated April 25th, 2007. This piece is signed by Sultan in pencil, along the bottom margin.

Born in 1951 in Asheville, North Carolina, Donald Sultan rose to prominence in the 1980's as a painter and draftsman of subjects such as lemons and flowers. He is best known for his rich use of black, which is actually tar in many of his paintings. His work is voluminous and varied, manifesting itself in the media of paint, printing, and sculpting. His still-life's have been described as studies in contrast. Powerfully sensual, fleshy objects are rendered through a labor-intensive and unique method. Instead of canvas, Sultan works on masonite covered with 12-inch vinyl floor tiles. The tiles dictate the format: one foot squares, eight foot squares, or four foot squares. Sultan cuts the shapes he desires into the vinyl, fills in the cutout space with plaster and/or tar, and then paints over it. These multiple layers create the texture and subsequent richness.

Sultan has enjoyed a distinguished career as painter, printmaker, and sculptor, including works of garden pieces. His work is always concerned, on some level at least, with recognizable imagery. "Basically I think I am a Minimalist. But I keep trying to add as much stuff as I can and still keep the sense."

Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was raised in nearby Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He developed a love for drawing at a very early age, learning basic cartooning skills from his father and from the popular culture around him, such as Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney. Between 1980 and 1986, Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. His first solo exhibition in New York, held at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1982, was immensely popular and received critical acclaim. During this period, he participated in highly renowned international survey exhibitions such as Documenta 7 in Kassel Germany, the São Paulo Biennial and the Whitney Biennial. Haring completed numerous public projects in the first half of the 80's as well, ranging from an animation for the Spectracolor billboard in Times Square, designing sets and backdrops for theaters and clubs, developing watch designs for Swatch and creating murals worldwide. In April 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop, a retail store in SOHO selling T-shirts, toys, posters, buttons and magnets bearing his images. Haring considered the shop to be an extension of his work and painted the entire interior of the store in an abstract black on white mural, creating a striking and unique retail environment.

Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, its mandate being to provide funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children's programs and to expand the audience for Haring's work through exhibitions, publications and the licensing of his images. Haring enlisted his imagery during the last years of his life to speak about his own illness and generate activism and awareness about AIDS.

    Pristine
Signed Limited Edition 1986 Keith Haring's silkscreen on paper entitled "Bad Boys" is signed and numbered 17 of 30 by the artist in pencil, lower left. Although the signature of the artist is in the lower left hand corner when placed vertically, Haring intended for the picture to be displayed both vertically and horizontally. Although he was formally trained as a technical artist at the School of Visual Arts in New York, Keith Haring was focused more on creating art that could be seen by masses of people on a wider scale. With an interest in creating art that sent a poignant message, Haring dedicated much of his career to producing art that would challenge the viewer to think about the social statements being made. Much of Haring's work can be seen on the streets and subways of New York in elaborate forms of graffiti and murals.

Haring's 1986 "Bad Boys" showcases his flair for the dramatic through the use of energetic and chaotic lines and images. With a monochromatic palette of black and white, Haring creates a frantic and intense atmosphere full of uncertainty and angst. Full of flailing arms and buried heads, "Bad Boys" presents a view at the differences among people and the often violent approach to dealing with them. Haring's "Bad Boys" is a poignant look at society and the emotional state of the individual and the interaction among different personalities, opinions and beliefs.

Robert Indiana is known for his great graphical interpretations of common words and themes. This 1976 silkscreen, which is entitled "Golden Future of America," is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and is numbered in pencil, lower left. Edition of 175.

Born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928, he adopted the name of his native state as a pseudonymous surname early in his career. During his typically Midwestern boyhood, highway signs had a symbolic importance for him. His father worked for Phillips 66 gas and, when he left his wife and son, he did so down Route 66. And the diner, which his mother subsequently operated, had the familiar "EAT" sign looming overhead. Indiana's best known image is the word love in upper-case letters, arranged in a square with a tilted letter O. This image, first created for a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964, was included on an eight-cent United States Postal Service postage stamp in 1973, the first of their regular series of "love stamps." His Love Sculptures are all over the major cities of the United States and throughout the world.

Whatever the judgment of later generations, Robert Rauschenberg is regarded as a tremendously influential force in twentieth-century art.

Signed Robert Rauschenberg Limited Edition Current and Surface 8 Hand-Printed Silkscreen

    Excellent
An original hand-printed silkscreen by the great contemporary artist Robert Rauschenberg, American (1925 - 2008), which is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left. This is from his series entitled "Current and Surface" where he uses his famous collage process recreated with silkscreens.

Born Milton Rauschenberg in Texas in 1925, he received a sound art education. He attended Kansas City Art Institute in 1947, and then the renowned Academie Julien in Paris in 1948. Process, object, environment and artist intertwine in Robert Rauschenberg's work. He embodies most of the ideas of this century's modern art, yet his powerful, idiosyncratic works are like those of no other artist. Rauschenberg’s work is contradictory. He sees the artist as a participant or reporter rather than a creator, but the stamp of his style and personality is evident in each of his paintings. Though his is an art of the concept, the idea, there is evident enjoyment in his engagement with the medium of expression and the material world.
