Having studied at l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, it is no surprise that the vibrant life within the City of Lights is the subject for Cobelle's "Place de la Concorde." The chic European metropolis was commonly seen through out his work, as it was a favorite theme of the artist and one that he studied at various times of day and in a variety of weather conditions.
Although Cobelle continues to create a whimsical scene in which the figures appear to be floating on air, his use of darker and richer colors evokes a more sober and realistic atmosphere. Place de la Concorde is the biggest area in Paris, carrying an abundance of French symbolism. During the Revolution, Place de la Concorde held the dreaded guillotine that took the lives of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. The grand obelisk, or Obelisk of Luxor that marked the entrance to the, in the center was a gift from Egypt and represented the new era after the Revolution. Studying under Marc Chagall, Cobelle evokes a whimsical and dreamlike sense with the figures and structures dancing on air and the use of bright and animated colors.
