  3. Signed Mel Ramos Limited Edition Peek A Boo Marilyn 3 Lithograph

Signed Mel Ramos Limited Edition Peek A Boo Marilyn 3 Lithograph

    Excellent
A signed limited edition lithograph by Mel Ramos, American (1935 - ) entitled "Peek a Boo Marilyn 3" created in 2002. This piece is an excellent example of Ramos' work in the realm of pin-up pop art and is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right. Mel Ramos is known for his humorous pin-up style using pop art figures.
Though primarily a figurative painter, Mel Ramos has experimented freely with realist and abstract art forms for the past twenty years. A few of his works, such as the ones here, embody both formats. This combination works to enhance the detail and feature of each format while detracting from the duality of the image making it wholly singular. The popularity of his works is evident in the fact that since 1959 he has participated in more than 120 group shows. Born in Sacramento, Calif. in 1935 he has enjoyed great success and critical acclaim as an adventuresome artist with the creativity and sense of humor it takes to remain on top. Mel Ramos received his first important recognition in the early 1960s. Ramos, along with other artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and James Rosenquist, produced art works that celebrated aspects of popular culture as represented in mass media. His paintings were shown along with theirs in major exhibitions of Pop Art both in this country and in Europe and were reproduced, often with irony, in books, catalogs, and periodicals throughout the world.
Some critical observers of the "art scene" persist in classifying Mel Ramos as a Pop Artist. His identification with the Pop movement of the 1960's was much too narrow to account for the broader context of his paintings. His humor is not satire of ridicule. His "parodies” are respectful, affectionate tributes, a celebration of images with personal meaning.

  5. Signed Framed Salvador Dali Limited Edition Helen Of Troy Lithograph

Signed Framed Salvador Dali Limited Edition Helen Of Troy Lithograph

    Excellent
A lithograph by the famous surrealist Salvador Dali entitled "Helen of Troy" from his Homage a Homer Suite is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right. Printed by Levine and Levine. This is a wonderful piece that showcases Dali's use of surrealism.

Salvador Dali was born in May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Dalí became a leader of the surrealist movement. His painting, The Persistence of Memory, with the soft or melting watches is still one of the best-known surrealist works. But as the war approached, the apolitical Dalí clashed with the surrealists and was "expelled" from the surrealist group during a "trial" in 1934. He did however, exhibit works in international surrealist exhibitions throughout the decade but by 1940, Dalí was moving into a new style that eventually became known as his "classic" period, demonstrating a preoccupation with science and religion. As an artist, Salvador Dalí was not limited to a particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. Dalí worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, and sculptures, jewels and objects of all descriptions.

This is an exquisite example of the work of Salvador Dali is a great example of the impact and beauty that Dali has brought to the world of art.

Referenced in "The Official Catalog of the Graphic works of Salvador Dali" by Albert Field, 1996 as Figure 77-4 B on page 118.

This framed lithograph is on Japon paper with Chine Colle and is unsigned from an edition of 750. Printed by Trestle Editions and published by Limited Editions Club.

A leading exponent of American abstract expressionism, Robert Motherwell has served as a vital spokesman for the avant-garde of the mid-twentieth century. He introduced the term "abstract expressionism" to the United States and helped crystallize the direction of the new movement with his painting and writing. Born in Aberdeen, Washington Motherwell studied at the Otis Institute and the California School of Fine Arts, before moving permanently to the Fast coast as a young man. He studied philosophy at Harvard and art history at Columbia, deciding at age 26 to become a painter. In 1942, following a trip to Mexico, he settled in New York City to begin professional painting.

A modern abstract work by Robert Motherwell, American (1915 - 1991), which was created as part of the portfolio "Three Poems" by Octavio Paz in 1987.

Born in Aberdeen, Washington Motherwell studied at the Otis Institute and the California School of Fine Arts, before moving permanently to the East coast as a young man. He studied philosophy at Harvard and art history at Columbia, deciding at age 26 to become a painter. In 1942, following a trip to Mexico, he settled in New York City to begin professional painting.

Motherwell found his medium in 1943 when noted art patron Peggy Guggenheim asked three American artists, including Motherwell, to contribute to the first all-collage show held in this country. Motherwell set to work with paper, scissors and paste, an experience that galvanized him to adopt collage as his continuing mode of expression. One year later, he held his first one-man show at the Art of This Century Gallery. Since then, he has been included in every major exhibition of American abstract art.

In 1922, Magritte married Georgette Berger, with whom he first became acquainted when he was fifteen years old. After meeting again in 1920, she became his model and then wife. A lithograph entitled "Friends of the Philadelphia Museum" by pop portraitist, Alex Katz. This lithograph, which is signed by the artist in pencil, lower left and numbered in pencil, lower right, was the basis for a very popular poster that Alex Katz produced for many of the popular museums across the country.

Alex Katz is a leading figure painter of the new realism movement in contemporary art. He is best known for his realistic portraits of friends and family, notable for their relaxed attitudes and uncomplicated bearing. Katz was born in New York City, and studied art at the Cooper Union from 1945 to 1949. In the late 1950s, he found himself among a growing number of artists dissatisfied with the then-dominant stream of abstract expressionism, with its emphasis on formal abstraction. A summer resident of Lincolnville, Maine since 1954, he has developed a close relationship with local Colby College. The college presented him with an honorary doctorate in 1984. In October 1996, the Colby College Museum of Art opened a wing dedicated to Katz that features more than 400 oil paintings, collages, and prints donated by the artist.

Signed Salvador Dali Limited Edition Cyclopean Make-Up Lithograph With Collage

    Excellent
A lithograph with collage on arches by the famous surrealist Salvador Dali (Spanish 1904 - 1989) entitled "Cyclopean Make-Up" created in 1971 from his Imaginations and Objects of the Future suite. This piece is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left.

Salvador Dali was born in May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Dalà became a leader of the surrealist movement. His painting, The Persistence of Memory, with the soft or melting watches is still one of the best-known surrealist works. But as the war approached, the apolitical Dalà clashed with the surrealists and was "expelled" from the surrealist group during a "trial" in 1934. He did however, exhibit works in international surrealist exhibitions throughout the decade but by 1940, Dalà was moving into a new style that eventually became known as his "classic" period, demonstrating a preoccupation with science and religion. As an artist, Salvador Dalà was not limited to a particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. Dalà worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, and sculptures, jewels and objects of all descriptions. In 1974, Dalà opened the Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain. This was followed by retrospectives in Paris and London at the end of the decade. After the death of his wife, Gala, in 1982, DalÃ's health began to fail. It deteriorated further after he was burned in a fire in his home in Pubol in 1984. Two years later, a pace-maker was implanted. Much of this part of his life was spent in seclusion, first in Pubol and later in his apartments at Torre Galatea, adjacent to the Teatro Museo. Salvador Dalà died on January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure with respiratory complications.

This lithograph, which is entitled "Breathing Pneumatic Armchair," is from his Imaginations and Objects of the Future suite created from 1975-1976. This piece is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left.

Salvador Dali was born in May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Dal became a leader of the surrealist movement. His painting, The Persistence of Memory, with the soft or melting watches is still considered one of the best-known surrealist works. As the war approached, the apolitical Dal clashed with the surrealists and was "expelled" from the surrealist group during a "trial" in 1934. He did however, exhibit works in international surrealist exhibitions throughout the decade but by 1940, Dal was moving into a new style that eventually became known as his "classic" period, demonstrating a preoccupation with science and religion. As an artist, Salvador Dal was not limited to a particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. Dal worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, and sculptures, jewels and objects of all descriptions. In 1974, Dal opened the Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain. This was followed by retrospectives in Paris and London at the end of the decade. After the death of his wife, Gala, in 1982, Dal's health began to fail. It deteriorated further after he was burned in a fire in his home in Pubol in 1984. Two years later, a pace-maker was implanted. Much of this part of his life was spent in seclusion, first in Pubol and later in his apartments at Torre Galatea, adjacent to the Teatro Museo. Salvador Dal died on January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure with respiratory complications.

Tragically Keith Haring died of AIDS the same year this lithograph was produced, which has a special meaning for Haring fans. This piece is an edition of 1000 and was issued unsigned.

Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was raised in nearby Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He developed a love for drawing at a very early age, learning basic cartooning skills from his father and from the popular culture around him, such as Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney. Between 1980 and 1986, Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. His first solo exhibition in New York, held at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1982, was immensely popular and received critical acclaim. During this period, he participated in highly renowned international survey exhibitions such as Documenta 7 in Kassel Germany, the São Paulo Biennial and the Whitney Biennial. Haring completed numerous public projects in the first half of the 80's as well, ranging from an animation for the Spectracolor billboard in Times Square, designing sets and backdrops for theaters and clubs, to developing watch designs for Swatch and creating murals worldwide. In April 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop, a retail store in SOHO selling T-shirts, toys, posters, buttons and magnets bearing his images. Haring considered the shop to be an extension of his work and painted the entire interior of the store in an abstract black on white mural, creating a striking and unique retail environment.

Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, its mandate being to provide funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children's programs, and to expand the audience for Haring's work through exhibitions, publications and the licensing of his images. Haring enlisted his imagery during the last years of his life to speak about his own illness and generate activism and awareness about AIDS.

  43. Signed Framed Mel Ramos Limited Edition Martini Miss Lithograph

Signed Framed Mel Ramos Limited Edition Martini Miss Lithograph

    Excellent
A signed limited edition lithograph by Mel Ramos, American (1935 - ) entitled "Martini Miss" created in 2004. This piece is an excellent example of Ramos' work in the realm of pin-up pop art and is signed and numbered by the artist in pencil, along the bottom margin. Mel Ramos is known for his humorous pin-up style pop art figures.

His "parodies" are respectful, affectionate tributes, a celebration of images with personal meaning.
