Signed Framed Richard Lindner Limited Edition Pillow and Almost Circle Lithograph
ExcellentA framed lithograph by the famed artist, Richard Lindner that is entitled "Pillow and Almost a Circle," is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right. This piece features one of the "circus women/streetwalker" images that he has become well known for. The lithograph was printed in 1969 and is from an edition of 250.
Painter Richard Lindner's highly idiosyncratic work incorporates elements of his personal history, as well as literary associations. The element of introspection separates his work from pop art. He was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1901 to an American mother and a German father. In 1925, after a brief career as a concert pianist, Lindner entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Eventually, he became an art director for Knorr & Hirth, a publisher closely associated with the Nazis. There, Lindner met high-ranking Nazis, including Hitler. Though he became a United States citizen in 1948, Lindner considered himself a New Yorker, but not a true American. However, over the course of time, his continental circus women became New York City streetwalkers. New York police uniforms replaced European military uniforms as symbols of authority. Lindner taught at the Pratt Institute from 1952 to 1965. He died in 1978. -

Signed Don Eddy Limited Edition Red Mercedes Lithograph
ExcellentA photo-realistic pop art piece by Don Eddy (American, 1944 - ) entitled "Red Mercedes." This piece was created in 1972 and is from an edition of 300. Don Eddy is widely heralded as one of the greats in realism and this piece combines two of the most popular art forms today: pop and photo-realism.
A realist artist, sometimes called a photo-realist, Don Eddy works in acrylic on canvas as well as in colored pencil on paper. Over the past decade, Eddy has moved from images of toys floating in front of landscapes and majestic architectural interiors within the perimeters of one rectangular canvas to juxtaposing images in triptych and polytych configurations. Underlying his panoply of images from nature and man's interaction there-with is a profound desire to explore (and by so doing achieve a better understanding of) the mysteries of being. The artist's juxtaposition of images is never literal, narrative or didactic, but poetic, infused with his interest in things philosophical and spiritual. Eddy studied at the University of California and the University of Hawaii and has had numerous shows all over the United States. Eddy's work is highly collected as well by some of the largest corporations and governmental agencies. -
Framed Georges Braque After Torero from the Espace Portfolio Lithograph
ExcellentA great example of the modern artwork of Georges Braque, French (1882 - 1963). This piece is a lithograph from the Espace Series of prints entitled "Torero." The lithograph was printed by L'Imprimier Union in Paris in 1957 from the original in 1952, and is therefore considered an after piece; it is not signed by Braque. The portfolio tirage sheet of Espace was signed by Braque and therefore these pieces were all overseen by the artist in ink. Published by Au Vent d'Arles, Paris, 1957.
Georges Braque was born on May 13, 1882, in Argenteuil-sur-Seine, France. He grew up in Le Havre and studied evenings at the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts from about 1897 to 1899. He left for Paris to study under a master decorator to receive his craftsman certificate in 1901. From 1902 to 1904, he painted at the Académie Humbert in Paris, where he met Marie Laurencin and Francis Picabia. By 1906, Braque's work was no longer Impressionist but Fauve in style. After spending the summer of 1906 in Antwerp with Othon Friesz, he showed his Fauve work the following year in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. His first solo show was at Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler's gallery in 1908. Beginning in 1909, Pablo Picasso and Braque worked together in developing Cubism; by 1911 their styles were extremely similar. In 1912, they started to incorporate collage elements into their paintings and to experiment with the papier collé (pasted paper) technique. Their artistic collaboration lasted until 1914. Braque served in the French army during World War I and was wounded. Upon his recovery in 1917, he began a close friendship with Juan Gris. During the last few years of his life, Braque's ill health prevented him from undertaking further large-scale commissions, but he continued to paint, create lithographs, and design jewelry. He died on August 31, 1963, in Paris. -
Signed Framed Cesar Baldaccini Limited Edition Compressed Plastic Lithograph
ExcellentAn exquisite piece of pop art by the great artist, César Baldaccini (French, 1921 - 1998). This piece is entitled "Compressed Plastic" and is a lithograph from an edition of 150 and hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
Baldaccini is considered as perhaps the greatest innovator among modern artists. His work is astonishing in its range, use of varied materials, and originality. César Baldaccini's (1921 - 1998) extraordinary life and career began in the Marseille ghetto of Belle-de-Mai where he and his twin sister were born on January 1, 1921. At age 13 young César left school to work with his father in the wine business. At 15, César's mother encouraged him to enroll in night classes at the local art school, where he rapidly distinguished himself. He soon found himself at the Ecole des Beaus-Arts in Paris. In 1960, he fundamentally altered the course of metal sculpture by inventing the automobile compression. His grand scale human "imprints" represented the first use of plastic as an accepted medium for sculptural expression. In the late 1960's, he again manifested his explosive innovativeness when he first came upon the expressive potentialities of polyurethane frames, which were richly fulfilled in his ebullient expansions. Cesar's expressive junk sculpture, his distinctive crystal sculptures, his plaques (Bas Reliefs) his envahissements (objects covered with plastic or metal), and his successful jewelry compressions further demonstrate his impressive virtuosity and versatility. -
Framed Marc Chagall After La Message Biblique Lithograph Poster
ExcellentA framed lithograph poster by the Russian/French artist Marc Chagall. This lithograph poster was created in 1967 for a gallery and Louvre museum exhibition of Chagall's "Le Message Biblique." The piece is not signed but is a rare poster that highlights the great work of Marc Chagall.
Marc Chagall (7 July 1887 -- 28 March 1985) was a Russian-Belarusian-French painter of Jewish origin, who was born in Belarus, which at that time was part of the Russian Empire. He is associated with the modern movements after impressionism. Marc Chagall was born Moishe Shagal; his name was rendered in the Russian language as Mark Zakharovich Shagalov. In 1950, he also began experimenting with graphic mediums. After meeting with Fernand Mourlot, with whom he developed a close relationship, he often visited Mourlot Studios where he eventually produced close to a thousand different lithographic editions. With the assistance of Charles Sorlier, a master printer working at Mourlot, he spent 30 years exploring the graphic medium that most lends itself to color representation. Charles Sorlier also became one of his closest friends, assistant and counsel until the day of his death. At the age of 97, Chagall died in Saint-Paul de Vence on the French Riviera on March 28, 1985 and was buried at the local cemetery. His plot is located in the most westerly aisle upon entering the cemetery. -
Signed Framed Salvador Dali Limited Edition Les Caprices Pinces Princiers Lithograph
ExcellentA lithograph with separate engraving by Salvador Dali. This piece is from the portfolio, "Les Dinere de Gala" and is entitled "Les Caprices Pinces Princiers" from 1975. The piece is from an edition of 395 and the separate engraving at the bottom of the piece is entitled "La Cuillere aux Bequilles" or "Spoon on Crutches." Les dinere de Gala is a portfilio of ornate edible creations.
Salvador Dali was born in May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Dal became a leader of the surrealist movement. His painting, "The Persistence of Memory," with the soft or melting watches is still one of the best-known surrealist works. But as the war approached, the apolitical Dal clashed with the surrealists and was "expelled" from the surrealist group during a "trial" in 1934. He did however, exhibit works in international surrealist exhibitions throughout the decade but by 1940, Dal was moving into a new style that eventually became known as his "classic" period, demonstrating a preoccupation with science and religion. As an artist, Salvador Dal was not limited to any particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. Dal worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, sculptures, jewels and objects of all descriptions. In 1974, Dal opened the Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain. This was followed by retrospectives in Paris and London at the end of the decade. After the death of his wife, Gala, in 1982, Dal's health began to fail. It deteriorated further after he was burned in a fire in his home in Pubol in 1984. Two years later, a pace-maker was implanted. Much of this part of his life was spent in seclusion, first in Pubol and later in his apartments at Torre Galatea, adjacent to the Teatro Museo. Salvador Dal died on January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure with respiratory complications. -

Estate Signed Fernand Leger Limited Edition The Parade Lithograph

French painter Fernand Léger was aligned with the cubist movement and was an innovator in abstract art. He studied briefly at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1903. By 1911, he had become friendly with Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso and had exhibited at the Salon des Independants. Leger continually experimented with color, shape, movement, and space. Roy Lichtenstein As I Opened Fire Triptych Of Three Offset Lithographs On Paper
ExcellentA set of three offset lithographs by Roy Lichtenstein entitled collectively as, "As I Opened Fire." The first lithograph in typical comic book pop art style says, "As I opened fire. I knew why Tex hadn't buzzed me--If He Had-- BRAT!." The second, "The enemy would have been warned..." and the third, "that my ship was below them..." The set of lithographs are printed on white wove paper and were printed in 1990; the original printing of these lithographs was in 1966. Issued unsigned. Published by Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and printed by Drukkerij Luli & Co., Amsterdam.
Born in New York City in 1923, Lichtenstein studied briefly at the Art Students League then enrolled at Ohio State University. After serving in the army from 1943 to 1946, he returned to Ohio State to get a master's degree and to teach. Roy Lichtenstein is a pop art painter whose works, in a style derived from comic strips, portray the trivialization of culture endemic in contemporary American life. Using bright, strident colors and techniques borrowed from the printing industry, he ironically incorporates mass-produced emotions and objects into highly sophisticated references to art history. Primary colors--red, yellow and blue, heavily outlined in black--became his favorites. Occasionally he used green. Instead of shades of color, he used the benday dot, a method by which an image is created and its density of tone modulated in printing. Sometimes he selected a comic-strip scene, recomposed it, projected it onto his canvas and stenciled in the dots. "I want my painting to look as if it had been programmed," Lichtenstein explained. -

Signed Christo The Gates Central Park Project NYC Lithograph
PristineA signed lithograph by the famous environmental artist Christo (Bulgarian, 1935 - ), which is entitled "The Gates Project: Central Park NYC." This piece is a graphical interpretation by Christo of his Gates Project in New York City and is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right.
Christo (born Javashev Christo) is best known for producing enormous packaging projects: he wraps parks, buildings, and entire outdoor landscapes. Christo has collaborated with his wife Jeanne-Claude for over 40 years on these projects. The two earn the huge amounts of money required to execute their monumental works by executing and then selling preparatory drawings to collectors and dealers. In Christo's printed and three-dimensional work, Christo wraps an object, challenging the viewer to accurately remember the concealed object and giving it the notion of rarity because it is inaccessible. Nine documentary films were made about the projects of Christo and Jeanne-Claude. One of their most famous projects is Running Fence, which they constructed in Sonoma and Marin Counties, California. Christo and Jeanne-Claude accept no sponsors; they pay for all their expenses for their projects with their own funds. Their work has been included in museum exhibitions in the United States, Australia, Europe and Israel, and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.
About the Gates: For those who walked through The Gates, following the walkways, the saffron-colored fabric was a golden ceiling creating warm shadows. When seen from the buildings surrounding Central Park, The Gates seemed like a golden river appearing and disappearing through the bare branches of the trees and highlighting the shape of the meandering footpaths. The Gates remained in Central park for 16 days. Removal started on February 28, 2005 and was completed on March 11, 2005. -
Signed Will Barnet Limited Edition The Skaters Lithograph
ExcellentA signed limited edition lithograph by Will Barnet, American (1911 - ) entitled "The Skaters." Will Barnet is one of the most treasured American artists alive today; this piece truly encompasses his style and additions to the art world. "The Skaters," which is signed by the artist in pencil lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left, is a piece that showcases Barnet's skill in the modern American portrait and as James Thomas Flexner wrote, Barnet's work "makes us experience the interplay between the personal and the universal."
Will Barnet was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, and studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and then at the Art Students League in New York. He cites Daumier as his first great inspiration at the age of 14, both for "his profound vision of life and his unequalled draftsmanship." From the earliest years Barnet valued concept equally with technique. Printmaking gave him a wider, freer means of expression although painting has remained another important medium throughout his career. Barnet's impressive exhibition record extends from 1934 to 2002. His work is in the collections of American's major museums, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery; Art Institute of Chicago,; Corcoran Gallery of Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Fine Art, Boston; National Gallery of Art; Phillips Collection; Seattle Art Museum; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. -
Robert Motherwell Ltd Ed Lincoln Center Mostly Mozart 25th Anniversary Lithograph & Screenprint
ExcellentA great modern work by the artist Robert Motherwell, American (1915 - 1991). This work of art was created for the 25th anniversary of the Lincoln Center in New York City performance of Mostly Mozart. The print is on Coventry paper and uses both process of lithograph and screenprinting. Issued unsigned. Printed by Trestle Editions Ltd., NY.
A leading exponent of American abstract expressionism, Robert Motherwell has served as a vital spokesman for the avant-garde of the mid-twentieth century. He introduced the term "abstract expressionism into the United States, and helped crystallize the direction of the new movement with his painting and writing. Born in Aberdeen, Washington, Motherwell studied at the Otis Institute and the California School of Fine Arts, before moving permanently to the Fast coast as a young man. He studied philosophy at Harvard and art history at Columbia, deciding at age 26 to become a painter. In 1942, following a trip to Mexico, he settled in New York City to begin professional painting. Motherwell found his medium in 1943 when noted art patron Peggy Guggenheim asked three American artists, including Motherwell, to contribute to the first all-collage show held in this country. Motherwell set to work with paper, scissors and paste, an experience that galvanized him to adopt collage as his continuing mode of expression. One year later, he held his first one-man show at the Art of This Century Gallery. Since then, he has been included in every major exhibition of American abstract art. -
Signed Mel Ramos Limited Edition Wonder Woman Lithograph
ExcellentA limited edition lithograph by Mel Ramos, American (1935 - ) entitled "Wonder Woman" created in 1981. This piece is an excellent example of Ramos' work in the realm of pin-up pop art and is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left. Mel Ramos is known for his humorous pin-up style using pop art figures.
Though primarily a figurative painter, Mel Ramos has experimented freely with realist and abstract art forms for the past twenty years. A few of his works, such as the ones here, embody both formats. This combination works to enhance the detail and feature of each format while detracting from the duality of the image making it wholly singular. The popularity of his works is evident in the fact that since 1959 he has participated in more than 120 group shows. Born in Sacramento, Calif. in 1935 he has enjoyed great success and critical acclaim as an adventuresome artist with the creativity and sense of humor it takes to remain on top. Mel Ramos received his first important recognition in the early 1960s. Ramos, along with other artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and James Rosenquist, produced art works that celebrated aspects of popular culture as represented in mass media. His paintings were shown along with theirs in major exhibitions of Pop Art both in this country and in Europe and were reproduced, often with irony, in books, catalogs, and periodicals throughout the world.
Some critical observers of the "art scene" persist in classifying Mel Ramos as a Pop Artist. His identification with the Pop movement of the 1960's was much too narrow to account for the broader context of his paintings. His humor is not satire of ridicule. His "parodies" are respectful, affectionate tributes, a celebration of images with personal meaning. -

He was in London for a short period in 1936 and worked with Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy. Matta's employment with the architects of the Spanish Republican pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition (1937) exposed him to Picasso's Guernica (1937; Madrid, Prado) which greatly impressed him and influenced him in his work. At this time, he was introduced to the work of Marcel Duchamp, whom he met not long after. He later went to Scandinavia where he met the architect Alvar Aalto and then to Russia where he worked on housing design projects. Matta died in Civitavecchia, Italy, in November of 2002.

Signed Richard Lindner On - New York City Lithograph
ExcellentA fun pop art print by famed artist, Richard Lindner, German (1901 - 1978). The 1968 lithograph from the psychedelic era is entitled "On - New York City," is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right. Produced and published by Shorewood Publishers In., NY, NY as a Samuel Shore Special-Lindner April 1, 1971.
Painter Richard Lindner's highly idiosyncratic work incorporates elements of his personal history, as well as literary associations. The element of introspection separates his work from pop art. He was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1901 to an American mother and a German father. After a brief career as a concert pianist, in 1925 Lindner entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
This print is executed beautifully and really illustrates the impact of Richard Lindner in the art world today. -
Henri Matisse 1954 Le Signe de Vie Portrait Lithograph
PristineHenri Matisse 1954 unsigned lithograph entitled, "Le Signe de Vie." The original signed lithograph was done in 1946 as part of a 300 piece set that was printed at Mourlot Freres, Paris.
Considered one of the greatest French artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Henri Matisse combines sensual lines with a vibrant barrage of color to create a warm and inviting piece of art. The use of bright and loud colors with a loose and painterly approach to art was through his influence and acceptance of the Fauvist style in which he worked. Through his close attention to detail and experimentation with the female figure made, Matisse is best known for his still life scenes and nude portraits.
Having studied under the great French Symbolist painter, Gustave Moreau, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, Matisse was taught the technical and painterly approach to art passed down by the Great Masters of the past. Matisse was encouraged to ignite his own individual style and infuse new breath into the academic and technical teachings of the past. "Le Signe de Vie" highlights Matisse's skill at capturing the essence of the individual within a portrait setting. The loose and free strokes enhance the sweet and feminine features of this unknown individual. -
Andy Warhol 1954 Holy Cats Hand Printed Lithograph
ExcellentAndy Warhol untitled lithograph from his 1954 book entitled Holy Cats. Photolithograph on green colored paper from Warhol's privately printed book of ink blotted line drawings and calligraphic text written by his mother, Julia Warhola. Self-printed in New York. Issued unsigned.
Having begun his career as a commercial illustrator, it is no surprise that Andy Warhol chose to depict mainstream images in his artwork. Working in the Pop Art style, Warhol infused bright and obscure colors to bring his symbolic images to life. Often creating his artwork based around a central figure, often a celebrity or recognizable image of every day use, in a variety of juxtaposed positions in a barrage of luminescent colors.
Mrs. Warhola, very protective of her son, moved from Pittsburgh to cook for him and take care of his many stray cats as he struggled to make it in the competitive New York advertising world. She was born in Poland and barely spoke any English. Andy liked her handwriting and asked her to write out the text for Holy Cats as well as Warhol's previous 1954 book 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy. He was delighted by the charming mistakes and random spelling errors his mother made as a non-English speaker.
Since Warhol's retrospective in 2002 at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) which included, for the first time, numerous drawings and paintings from the 40s and 50s, there has been renewed interest in this early work, which pre-dates the invention of pop art. Single unsigned sheets from the book 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy, which are hand-colored are now fetching between $20,000 - $25,000 per sheet at auction, however Holy Cats from the same year is still undiscovered by a wider group of collectors and is still very affordable. This hand printed lithograph on green colored paper showcases a friendly cat wearing a feathering and flowering hat with the text that reads, _Some Play with Themselves_. Using the monochromatic tone of black ink, Warhol enhances the fun and frivolity of the piece while rendering the feline in quick and loose line strokes.
