  1. Andy Warhol 1954 Holy Cats Hand Printed Lithograph

Andy Warhol 1954 Holy Cats Hand Printed Lithograph

    Excellent
Andy Warhol untitled lithograph from his 1954 book entitled Holy Cats. Photolithograph on green colored paper from Warhol's privately printed book of ink blotted line drawings and calligraphic text written by his mother, Julia Warhola. Self-printed in New York. Issued unsigned.

Having begun his career as a commercial illustrator, it is no surprise that Andy Warhol chose to depict mainstream images in his artwork. Working in the Pop Art style, Warhol infused bright and obscure colors to bring his symbolic images to life. Often creating his artwork based around a central figure, often a celebrity or recognizable image of every day use, in a variety of juxtaposed positions in a barrage of luminescent colors.

Mrs. Warhola, very protective of her son, moved from Pittsburgh to cook for him and take care of his many stray cats as he struggled to make it in the competitive New York advertising world. She was born in Poland and barely spoke any English. Andy liked her handwriting and asked her to write out the text for Holy Cats as well as Warhol's previous 1954 book 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy. He was delighted by the charming mistakes and random spelling errors his mother made as a non-English speaker.

Since Warhol's retrospective in 2002 at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) which included, for the first time, numerous drawings and paintings from the 40s and 50s, there has been renewed interest in this early work, which pre-dates the invention of pop art. Single unsigned sheets from the book 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy, which are hand-colored are now fetching between $20,000 - $25,000 per sheet at auction, however Holy Cats from the same year is still undiscovered by a wider group of collectors and is still very affordable. This hand printed lithograph on green colored paper showcases a friendly cat wearing a feathering and flowering hat with the text that reads, _Some Play with Themselves_. Using the monochromatic tone of black ink, Warhol enhances the fun and frivolity of the piece while rendering the feline in quick and loose line strokes.

    Excellent
An estate signed lithograph by the famous French Cubist artist, Fernand Léger, (1881 - 1955). This lithograph is entitled "The Parade" and is stamped by the Leger Museum.

French painter Fernand Léger was aligned with the cubist movement and was an innovator in abstract art. He studied briefly at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1903. By 1911, he had become friendly with Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso and had exhibited at the Salon des Independants. Leger continually experimented with color, shape, movement, and space. He was originally trained as an architect's draftsman and photographic retoucher. Having failed the entrance exam to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1903, he studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and the Academie Julian. In 1909, he ranked as one of the three major Cubists and became a member of the Puteaux group in 1911. He was the first of the Cubist artists to experiment with non-figurative abstraction, contrasting curvilinear forms against a rectilinear grid. Today his paintings and prints can be seen in prominent museums throughout the world.

The lithograph was printed by L'Imprimier Union in Paris in 1957 from the original in 1952, and is therefore considered an after piece; it is not signed by Braque. The portfolio tirage sheet of Espace was signed by Braque and therefore these pieces were all overseen by the artist in ink. Published by Au Vent d'Arles, Paris, 1957.

Georges Braque was born on May 13, 1882, in Argenteuil-sur-Seine, France. He grew up in Le Havre and studied evenings at the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts from about 1897 to 1899. He left for Paris to study under a master decorator to receive his craftsman certificate in 1901. From 1902 to 1904, he painted at the Académie Humbert in Paris, where he met Marie Laurencin and Francis Picabia. By 1906, Braque's work was no longer Impressionist but Fauve in style. After spending the summer of 1906 in Antwerp with Othon Friesz, he showed his Fauve work the following year in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. His first solo show was at Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler's gallery in 1908. Beginning in 1909, Pablo Picasso and Braque worked together in developing Cubism; by 1911 their styles were extremely similar. In 1912, they started to incorporate collage elements into their paintings and to experiment with the papier collé (pasted paper) technique. Their artistic collaboration lasted until 1914. Braque served in the French army during World War I and was wounded. Upon his recovery in 1917, he began a close friendship with Juan Gris. During the last few years of his life, Braque's ill health prevented him from undertaking further large-scale commissions, but he continued to paint, create lithographs, and design jewelry. He died on August 31, 1963, in Paris.

  22. Framed Keith Haring Limited Edition United Nations - Fight AIDS Worldwide Lithograph

Framed Keith Haring Limited Edition United Nations - Fight AIDS Worldwide Lithograph

    Excellent
A lithograph on Arches by pop art icon, Keith Haring (1958 - 1990). This lithograph is a piece completed for the United Nations campaign of Fighting AIDS Worldwide. Tragically Keith Haring died of AIDS the same year this lithograph was produced, which has a special meaning for Haring fans. This piece is an edition of 1000 and was issued unsigned.

Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was raised in nearby Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He developed a love for drawing at a very early age, learning basic cartooning skills from his father and from the popular culture around him, such as Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney. Between 1980 and 1986, Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. His first solo exhibition in New York, held at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1982, was immensely popular and received critical acclaim. During this period, he participated in highly renowned international survey exhibitions such as Documenta 7 in Kassel Germany, the São Paulo Biennial and the Whitney Biennial. Haring completed numerous public projects in the first half of the 80's as well, ranging from an animation for the Spectracolor billboard in Times Square, designing sets and backdrops for theaters and clubs, to developing watch designs for Swatch and creating murals worldwide. In April 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop, a retail store in SOHO selling T-shirts, toys, posters, buttons and magnets bearing his images. Haring considered the shop to be an extension of his work and painted the entire interior of the store in an abstract black on white mural, creating a striking and unique retail environment.

Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, its mandate being to provide funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children's programs, and to expand the audience for Haring's work through exhibitions, publications and the licensing of his images. Haring enlisted his imagery during the last years of his life to speak about his own illness and generate activism and awareness about AIDS.

  23. Framed Marc Chagall After La Message Biblique Lithograph Poster

Framed Marc Chagall After La Message Biblique Lithograph Poster

    Excellent
A framed lithograph poster by the Russian/French artist Marc Chagall. This lithograph poster was created in 1967 for a gallery and Louvre museum exhibition of Chagall's "Le Message Biblique." The piece is not signed but is a rare poster that highlights the great work of Marc Chagall.

Marc Chagall (7 July 1887 -- 28 March 1985) was a Russian-Belarusian-French painter of Jewish origin, who was born in Belarus, which at that time was part of the Russian Empire. He is associated with the modern movements after impressionism. Marc Chagall was born Moishe Shagal; his name was rendered in the Russian language as Mark Zakharovich Shagalov. In 1950, he also began experimenting with graphic mediums. After meeting with Fernand Mourlot, with whom he developed a close relationship, he often visited Mourlot Studios where he eventually produced close to a thousand different lithographic editions. With the assistance of Charles Sorlier, a master printer working at Mourlot, he spent 30 years exploring the graphic medium that most lends itself to color representation. Charles Sorlier also became one of his closest friends, assistant and counsel until the day of his death. At the age of 97, Chagall died in Saint-Paul de Vence on the French Riviera on March 28, 1985 and was buried at the local cemetery. His plot is located in the most westerly aisle upon entering the cemetery.

Framed Robert Motherwell Ltd Ed Octavio Paz Three Poems I Lithograph With Chine Colle

    Excellent
A modern abstract work by Robert Motherwell, American (1915 - 1991), which was created as part of the portfolio "Three Poems" by Octavio Paz in 1987. This framed lithograph is on Japon paper with Chine Colle and is unsigned from an edition of 750. Printed by Trestle Editions and published by Limited Editions Club.

A leading exponent of American abstract expressionism, Robert Motherwell has served as a vital spokesman for the avant-garde of the mid-twentieth century. He introduced the term "abstract expressionism" to the United States and helped crystallize the direction of the new movement with his painting and writing. Born in Aberdeen, Washington Motherwell studied at the Otis Institute and the California School of Fine Arts, before moving permanently to the Fast coast as a young man. He studied philosophy at Harvard and art history at Columbia, deciding at age 26 to become a painter. In 1942, following a trip to Mexico, he settled in New York City to begin professional painting.

Motherwell found his medium in 1943 when noted art patron Peggy Guggenheim asked three American artists, including Motherwell, to contribute to the first all-collage show held in this country. Motherwell set to work with paper, scissors and paste, an experience that galvanized him to adopt collage as his continuing mode of expression. One year later, he held his first one-man show at the Art of This Century Gallery. Since then, he has been included in every major exhibition of American abstract art.

A leading exponent of American abstract expressionism, Robert Motherwell has served as a vital spokesman for the avant-garde of the mid-twentieth century. He introduced the term "abstract expressionism" to the United States and helped crystallize the direction of the new movement with his painting and writing. Born in Aberdeen, Washington Motherwell studied at the Otis Institute and the California School of Fine Arts, before moving permanently to the East coast as a young man.

  45. Framed Salvador Dali La Tentation De Saint Antoine Lithograph

Framed Salvador Dali La Tentation De Saint Antoine Lithograph

    Excellent
A lithograph on velin by the famous surrealist Salvador Dali (Spanish 1904 - 1989), which is entitled "Le Tentation de Saint Antoine," is considered an after with the signature embossed, lower right. A lithographic print from the original painting: La Tentation de Saint Antoine - 1946, Oil on Canvas. Accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity from the Dali Estate.

Salvador Dali was born in May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Dal became a leader of the surrealist movement. His painting, The Persistence of Memory, with the soft or melting watches is still one of the best-known surrealist works. But as the war approached, the apolitical Dal clashed with the surrealists and was "expelled" from the surrealist group during a "trial" in 1934. He did however, exhibit works in international surrealist exhibitions throughout the decade but by 1940, Dal was moving into a new style that eventually became known as his "classic" period, demonstrating a preoccupation with science and religion. As an artist, Salvador Dal was not limited to a particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. Dal worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, and sculptures, jewels and objects of all descriptions. In 1974, Dal opened the Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain. This was followed by retrospectives in Paris and London at the end of the decade. After the death of his wife, Gala, in 1982, Dal's health began to fail. It deteriorated further after he was burned in a fire in his home in Pubol in 1984. Two years later, a pace-maker was implanted. Much of this part of his life was spent in seclusion, first in Pubol and later in his apartments at Torre Galatea, adjacent to the Teatro Museo. Salvador Dal died on January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure with respiratory complications.

Produced by Mourlot of Paris, Issued by Arta Gallery of Jerusalem. Lithographic Print from the original Painting: La Tentation de Saint Antoine - 1946, Oil on Canvas.

  48. Henri Matisse 1954 Le Signe de Vie Portrait Lithograph

Henri Matisse 1954 Le Signe de Vie Portrait Lithograph

    Pristine
Henri Matisse 1954 unsigned lithograph entitled, "Le Signe de Vie." The original signed lithograph was done in 1946 as part of a 300 piece set that was printed at Mourlot Freres, Paris.

Considered one of the greatest French artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Henri Matisse combines sensual lines with a vibrant barrage of color to create a warm and inviting piece of art. The use of bright and loud colors with a loose and painterly approach to art was through his influence and acceptance of the Fauvist style in which he worked. Through his close attention to detail and experimentation with the female figure made, Matisse is best known for his still life scenes and nude portraits.

Having studied under the great French Symbolist painter, Gustave Moreau, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, Matisse was taught the technical and painterly approach to art passed down by the Great Masters of the past. Matisse was encouraged to ignite his own individual style and infuse new breath into the academic and technical teachings of the past. "Le Signe de Vie" highlights Matisse's skill at capturing the essence of the individual within a portrait setting. The loose and free strokes enhance the sweet and feminine features of this unknown individual.
