Signed Framed Sam Francis Limited Edition Coral Lyre Nine Screenprint On Pescia
ExcellentA framed screenprint on pescia created in 1972 by the famous abstract artist, Sam Francis entitled "Coral Lyre Nine." This piece is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left. Printed and published by Gemini G.E.L. Los Angeles, CA.
Sam Francis, noted for his lyrical, colorful abstract works, was one of the first American artists to experiment with "empty-center" painting. Born in 1923 in San Mateo, California, Francis attended the University of California in Berkeley from 1941 to 1943, when he joined the Air Force. In 1945, hospitalized in San Francisco after an injury, he began painting under the influence of David Park. He had already developed an abstract style before returning to Berkeley for formal art studies in 1949 and 1950. In school, Francis developed the propensity for vivid blots of color and thinned pigments that are reflected in his mature work. Japanese influence is seen in Francis's unique early 1960s experimentation with empty-center painting. Vast canvases with unpainted central areas are defined, accented, or dominated by strokes and drips in bold colors around the extremities of the canvas. Suffering from prostate cancer and unable to paint with his right hand after a fall during the last year of his life, Francis used a final burst of energy to complete a dazzling series of about 150 small paintings with his left hand before his death in 1994. -

This painting is from the first visionary pop artist of the 1960's, to master of dynamic neo Expressionism, Peter Max (1937 - ) and his vibrant colors have become part of the fabric of contemporary American culture. In the 1960's Max rose to youthful prominence with his now-famous "Cosmic '60s" style, a bold linear type of painting which employed Fauvist use of color and depicted transcendental themes. He has celebrated our nation's principles of freedom and democracy with his famous paintings of American icons of freedom including Lady Liberty and the American Flag. In 1981 he painted six liberty portraits for the America President and Mrs. Reagan, and in 1993, his famous "100 Clintons' installation. Max has painted for five American presidents; Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton.
Max has had approximately forty museum shows internationally, and more than fifty gallery shows worldwide. His works appear in the prominent collections of many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
