  1. Signed LeRoy Neiman Limited Edition Breakway Serigraph

Signed LeRoy Neiman Limited Edition Breakway Serigraph

    Very Good
Signed LeRoy Neiman limited edition serigraph entitled, "Breakaway," is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered by the artist in pencil, lower left. This piece is number 136 in a series of 300. From the Nebraska Suite, which is a series of five pieces that include "National Champions," "Game of the Century," "Coach Devany," "Black Shirts," and "Breakaway." Printed in 1974. This piece is in very good condition with minor scuffing around the top center margin.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota LeRoy Neiman developed a great aptitude for drawing and sketching at an early age. In 1942, Neiman left high school and enlisted in the Army, where he created pieces for Red Cross shows and other sexually suggestive scenes in the military kitchens and dining halls. After 4 years with the Army he returned to the states to finish high school. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago, De Paul University and the University of Illinois. Having finished his studies, Neiman was at teacher at the Art Institute of Chicago for 10 years. In 1953, Neiman had his first solo shows in both Chicago and Lincoln, Illinois. That same year, Neiman began creating pieces for Playboy through his acquaintance with Hugh Hefner from a previous job as a freelance artist for a Chicago department store that helped to bring his art to a wider mass of people. He was most comfortable creating pieces that he was best acquainted. His favorite subjects to portray were related to the sports world because he felt that sports were a dominant universal force that were enjoyed by all walks of life. He became the official artist for ABC during the 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984 Olympics.

Considered one of the favorite and most well known American artists living today, LeRoy Neiman has built a reputation for creating pieces that bring to life every day images to life through an energetic barrage of bold colors. Neiman also built a reputation for his colorful interpretations of famous celebrities and athletes. Neiman relies heavily on a bright color palette that creates the violent and dramatic strokes that brings his subjects to life. As seen with his portraits, Neiman captures the person in the persona in which they have created themselves; he is not concerned with delving into the emotional feelings or personal thoughts of the figures. In this 1980 serigraph, Neiman portrays the timeless event of the New York Marathon in a bright barrage of colorful brushstrokes that enhance his domineering persona. The New York Marathon began in 1970 and is the world’s largest road race, spanning all five of the New York boroughs and attracting more than 37,000 runners annually.

  3. Signed Philip Pearlstein Two Nude Women Lithograph

Signed Philip Pearlstein Two Nude Women Lithograph

    Excellent
A lithograph entitled “Two Nude Women” by Philip Pearlstein, American (1924 - ), which was created in 2003 and is from an edition of 250. This piece is a great example of the flair and style he has brought to the art world with his realistic and graceful art.

A key figure in the sharp-focus realist movement, Philip Pearlstein was a leader in the early 1960s of the revival of figure painting in America. He was born and grew up in Pittsburgh and in 1944 enrolled at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He spent three years in the Army and then returned to school, graduating in 1949 with a B.F.A. He pursued graduate studies in art history at New York University and received a Master's Degree in 1955. He experimented briefly with landscapes and then concentrated on the realistic depiction of the nude figure, a traditional subject that had almost vanished from the contemporary art world. His work is characterized by a non-traditional informality, unexpected postures, and unusual perspectives including the radical cropping of figures. In his later works, he introduced rather elaborate backdrops including richly patterned fabrics and decorative floor patterns.

Signed Framed Robert Motherwell Espana II Aquatint and Lift Ground Etching

    Excellent
A great modern abstract work by Robert Motherwell, American (1915 - 1991). This framed piece is entitled "Espana II," which was signed by the artist in pencil along the bottom margin and was created in 1983. Printed by Catherine Mosely Studio, CT. Published by Brooke Alexander Inc, NY.

A leading exponent of American abstract expressionism, Robert Motherwell has served as a vital spokesman for the avant-garde of the mid-twentieth century. He introduced the term "abstract expressionism” into the United States, and helped crystallize the direction of the new movement with his painting and writing. Born in Aberdeen, Washington, Motherwell studied at the Otis Institute and the California School of Fine Arts, before moving permanently to the East coast as a young man. He studied philosophy at Harvard and art history at Columbia, deciding at age 26 to become a painter. In 1942, following a trip to Mexico, he settled in New York City to begin professional painting.

Motherwell found his medium in 1943 when noted art patron Peggy Guggenheim asked three American artists, including Motherwell, to contribute to the first all-collage show held in this country. Motherwell set to work with paper, scissors and paste, an experience that galvanized him to adopt collage as his continuing mode of expression. One year later, he held his first one-man show at the Art of This Century Gallery. Since then, he has been included in every major exhibition of American abstract art.

Signed Framed Richard Lindner Limited Edition Pillow and Almost Circle Lithograph

    Excellent
A framed lithograph by the famed artist, Richard Lindner that is entitled "Pillow and Almost a Circle," is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right. This piece features one of the "circus women/streetwalker" images that he has become well known for. The lithograph was printed in 1969 and is from an edition of 250.

Painter Richard Lindner's highly idiosyncratic work incorporates elements of his personal history, as well as literary associations. The element of introspection separates his work from pop art. He was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1901 to an American mother and a German father. In 1925, after a brief career as a concert pianist, Lindner entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Eventually, he became an art director for Knorr & Hirth, a publisher closely associated with the Nazis. There, Lindner met high-ranking Nazis, including Hitler. Though he became a United States citizen in 1948, Lindner considered himself a New Yorker, but not a true American. However, over the course of time, his continental circus women became New York City streetwalkers. New York police uniforms replaced European military uniforms as symbols of authority. Lindner taught at the Pratt Institute from 1952 to 1965. He died in 1978.

Framed Paul Klee Limited Edition 12 Aquarelles at Berggruen & Cie Poster

    Excellent
A great vintage poster of the work of Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) for an exhibit of Twelve Aquarelle drawings from October to November in 1964. The exhibition was held at Bergrruen and Cie in Paris, France. The poster is framed.

Paul Klee was born on December 18, 1879, in Münchenbuchsee, near Bern, Switzerland, the second child of Hans Klee, a German music teacher, and a Swiss mother. His training as a painter began in 1898 when he studied drawing and painting in Munich for three years. By 1911, he had returned to that city, where he became involved with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), founded by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc in 1911. Klee and Kandinsky became lifelong friends, and the support of the older painter provided much-needed encouragement. He visited Tunisia in 1914. In 1920, Walter Gropius invited Klee to join the faculty of the Bauhaus. Bauhaus was a school of architecture and industrial design operating first in Weimar (1919--25) and then Dessau (1925--32), it also included the study of arts and crafts. Nearly half of Klee's some 10,000 works (mainly small-scale watercolors and drawings on paper) were produced during the ten years he taught at the Bauhaus, and they vary widely. Klee developed his own often whimsical world of line and color, rich in symbolism and the expression of his vision of society.

  37. Signed Don Eddy Limited Edition Red Mercedes Lithograph

Signed Don Eddy Limited Edition Red Mercedes Lithograph

    Excellent
A photo-realistic pop art piece by Don Eddy (American, 1944 - ) entitled "Red Mercedes." This piece was created in 1972 and is from an edition of 300. Don Eddy is widely heralded as one of the greats in realism and this piece combines two of the most popular art forms today: pop and photo-realism.

A realist artist, sometimes called a photo-realist, Don Eddy works in acrylic on canvas as well as in colored pencil on paper. Over the past decade, Eddy has moved from images of toys floating in front of landscapes and majestic architectural interiors within the perimeters of one rectangular canvas to juxtaposing images in triptych and polytych configurations. Underlying his panoply of images from nature and man's interaction there-with is a profound desire to explore (and by so doing achieve a better understanding of) the mysteries of being. The artist's juxtaposition of images is never literal, narrative or didactic, but poetic, infused with his interest in things philosophical and spiritual. Eddy studied at the University of California and the University of Hawaii and has had numerous shows all over the United States. Eddy's work is highly collected as well by some of the largest corporations and governmental agencies.

  38. Signed Allan D'Arcangelo Limited Edition Smoke Dreams Serigraph

Signed Allan D'Arcangelo Limited Edition Smoke Dreams Serigraph

    Excellent
A pop art serigraph entitled "Smoke Dreams" by Allan D'Arcangelo (American 1930-1998). This piece was created in 1980 and highlights both his experimentation with the American highway and also the feminine figure. This piece, which is from an edition of 250, is signed and numbered by the artist in pencil.

Allan D'Arcangelo was born in Buffalo, New York. He earned a degree in history from the University of Buffalo and then moved to Mexico City where he studied art and, in 1958, had his first one-man show. His style, loosely termed "hard edge" or constructivist art, is based on spatial relationships. A keen sense of perception, complemented by expert use of color tones and shadows, points up these relationships within his forceful compositions. His reputation as a Pop artist was established by his one-man exhibition where he showed his first acrylic paintings of the American highway and industrial landscape, such as Highway U.S. 1 -- No. 3 (1963; Richmond, VA Mus. F.A.). It has been said that D'Arcangelo "has the ability to defy, yet document, spatial relationships at the same time." The recipient of fifteen awards and commissions, D 'Arcangelo has had frequent solo exhibitions, many of which traveled to prominent museums throughout America. His work appears in more than thirty public collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Detroit Institute of Art, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

  41. Signed Framed Salvador Dali Limited Edition Les Caprices Pinces Princiers Lithograph

Signed Framed Salvador Dali Limited Edition Les Caprices Pinces Princiers Lithograph

    Excellent
A lithograph with separate engraving by Salvador Dali. This piece is from the portfolio, "Les Dinere de Gala" and is entitled "Les Caprices Pinces Princiers" from 1975. The piece is from an edition of 395 and the separate engraving at the bottom of the piece is entitled "La Cuillere aux Bequilles" or "Spoon on Crutches." Les dinere de Gala is a portfilio of ornate edible creations.

Salvador Dali was born in May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Dal became a leader of the surrealist movement. His painting, "The Persistence of Memory," with the soft or melting watches is still one of the best-known surrealist works. But as the war approached, the apolitical Dal clashed with the surrealists and was "expelled" from the surrealist group during a "trial" in 1934. He did however, exhibit works in international surrealist exhibitions throughout the decade but by 1940, Dal was moving into a new style that eventually became known as his "classic" period, demonstrating a preoccupation with science and religion. As an artist, Salvador Dal was not limited to any particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. Dal worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, sculptures, jewels and objects of all descriptions. In 1974, Dal opened the Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain. This was followed by retrospectives in Paris and London at the end of the decade. After the death of his wife, Gala, in 1982, Dal's health began to fail. It deteriorated further after he was burned in a fire in his home in Pubol in 1984. Two years later, a pace-maker was implanted. Much of this part of his life was spent in seclusion, first in Pubol and later in his apartments at Torre Galatea, adjacent to the Teatro Museo. Salvador Dal died on January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure with respiratory complications.

  43. Framed Georges Braque After Torero from the Espace Portfolio Lithograph

Framed Georges Braque After Torero from the Espace Portfolio Lithograph

    Excellent
A great example of the modern artwork of Georges Braque, French (1882 - 1963). This piece is a lithograph from the Espace Series of prints entitled "Torero." The lithograph was printed by L'Imprimier Union in Paris in 1957 from the original in 1952, and is therefore considered an after piece; it is not signed by Braque. The portfolio tirage sheet of Espace was signed by Braque and therefore these pieces were all overseen by the artist in ink. Published by Au Vent d'Arles, Paris, 1957.

Georges Braque was born on May 13, 1882, in Argenteuil-sur-Seine, France. He grew up in Le Havre and studied evenings at the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts from about 1897 to 1899. He left for Paris to study under a master decorator to receive his craftsman certificate in 1901. From 1902 to 1904, he painted at the Académie Humbert in Paris, where he met Marie Laurencin and Francis Picabia. By 1906, Braque's work was no longer Impressionist but Fauve in style. After spending the summer of 1906 in Antwerp with Othon Friesz, he showed his Fauve work the following year in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. His first solo show was at Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler's gallery in 1908. Beginning in 1909, Pablo Picasso and Braque worked together in developing Cubism; by 1911 their styles were extremely similar. In 1912, they started to incorporate collage elements into their paintings and to experiment with the papier collé (pasted paper) technique. Their artistic collaboration lasted until 1914. Braque served in the French army during World War I and was wounded. Upon his recovery in 1917, he began a close friendship with Juan Gris. During the last few years of his life, Braque's ill health prevented him from undertaking further large-scale commissions, but he continued to paint, create lithographs, and design jewelry. He died on August 31, 1963, in Paris.

  44. Signed Framed Cesar Baldaccini Limited Edition Compressed Plastic Lithograph

Signed Framed Cesar Baldaccini Limited Edition Compressed Plastic Lithograph

    Excellent
An exquisite piece of pop art by the great artist, César Baldaccini (French, 1921 - 1998). This piece is entitled "Compressed Plastic" and is a lithograph from an edition of 150 and hand-signed and numbered by the artist.

Baldaccini is considered as perhaps the greatest innovator among modern artists. His work is astonishing in its range, use of varied materials, and originality. César Baldaccini's (1921 - 1998) extraordinary life and career began in the Marseille ghetto of Belle-de-Mai where he and his twin sister were born on January 1, 1921. At age 13 young César left school to work with his father in the wine business. At 15, César's mother encouraged him to enroll in night classes at the local art school, where he rapidly distinguished himself. He soon found himself at the Ecole des Beaus-Arts in Paris. In 1960, he fundamentally altered the course of metal sculpture by inventing the automobile compression. His grand scale human "imprints" represented the first use of plastic as an accepted medium for sculptural expression. In the late 1960's, he again manifested his explosive innovativeness when he first came upon the expressive potentialities of polyurethane frames, which were richly fulfilled in his ebullient expansions. Cesar's expressive junk sculpture, his distinctive crystal sculptures, his plaques (Bas Reliefs) his envahissements (objects covered with plastic or metal), and his successful jewelry compressions further demonstrate his impressive virtuosity and versatility.

Framed Marc Chagall After La Message Biblique Lithograph Poster

    Excellent
A framed lithograph poster by the Russian/French artist Marc Chagall. This lithograph poster was created in 1967 for a gallery and Louvre museum exhibition of Chagall's "Le Message Biblique." The piece is not signed but is a rare poster that highlights the great work of Marc Chagall.

Marc Chagall (7 July 1887 -- 28 March 1985) was a Russian-Belarusian-French painter of Jewish origin, who was born in Belarus, which at that time was part of the Russian Empire. He is associated with the modern movements after impressionism. Marc Chagall was born Moishe Shagal; his name was rendered in the Russian language as Mark Zakharovich Shagalov. In 1950, he also began experimenting with graphic mediums. After meeting with Fernand Mourlot, with whom he developed a close relationship, he often visited Mourlot Studios where he eventually produced close to a thousand different lithographic editions. With the assistance of Charles Sorlier, a master printer working at Mourlot, he spent 30 years exploring the graphic medium that most lends itself to color representation. Charles Sorlier also became one of his closest friends, assistant and counsel until the day of his death. At the age of 97, Chagall died in Saint-Paul de Vence on the French Riviera on March 28, 1985 and was buried at the local cemetery. His plot is located in the most westerly aisle upon entering the cemetery.

  46. Signed Framed Richard Anuskiewicz Autumn Suite (Purple with Red) Intaglio Etching With Aquatint

Signed Framed Richard Anuskiewicz Autumn Suite (Purple with Red) Intaglio Etching With Aquatint

    Excellent
A framed limited edition intaglio etching with aquatint by the great optical artist, Richard Anuszkiewicz, entitled Autumn Suite (Purple with Red). This piece was created in 1979 and is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered by the artist in pencil, lower left. Printed by Deli Sacilotto, Atelier Editions, Inc. New York City.

Richard Anuszkiewicz (American, 1930 - ) who was a student of Josef Albers, shares Albers' fascination with shapes and their relationships to color. Considered a major force in the Op Art movement, Anuszkiewicz is concerned with the optical changes that occur when different high-intensity colors are applied to the same geometric configurations. Each of his prints has its own rhythm and therefore, its own energy as part of a lyrical composition. He has won many awards and has been a frequent exhibitor in museums throughout the world. His work is included in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Fogg Museum of Harvard University in Cambridge, and the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

In 1964, Life magazine called him "The New Wizard of Op." More recently, while reflecting on a New York City gallery show of Anuszkiewicz's from 2000, the New York Times art critic Holland Cotter described Anuszkiewicz's paintings by stating, "The drama -- and that feels like the right word -- is in the subtle chemistry of complementary colors, which makes the geometry glow as if light were leaking out from behind it." Anuszkiewicz has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Florence Biennale and Documenta, and in permanent collections internationally.

Signed Framed Victor Vasarely Limited Edition Composition Silkscreen

    Excellent
A signed limited edition serigraph by Victor Vasarely, Hungarian (1908 - 1997) entitled "Composition." It is a silkscreen that was created by the artist in 1964, an early example of his artwork. This piece is an excellent example of Vasarely's work in the world of optical art. This piece is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left.

Hungarian-born Victor Vasarely is known as a founder of optical art. He studied at the Bauhaus Muhely in Budapest and in 1930 moved to Paris where he developed his particular vision which stems from the idea of democratizing the art object. Influenced greatly by the problems of the world's cities, he feels his work offers a solution by presenting a clear view of the "color-surface-perception" relationship. He has used the income from the sale of these "investigations," as he calls his prints, to establish a socio-cultural foundation in Aix-en-Provence, France, for the study of the integration of plastic beauty at all levels of the urban environment. He is represented in major museums all over the world and has received many artistic and honorary awards. Among these distinctions are the French Legion of Honor, the Guggenheim Prize, and the Gold Medal of the Triennale in Milan.
