  1. Signed Arman Limited Edition Symphonie Pastorale Serigraph

Signed Arman Limited Edition Symphonie Pastorale Serigraph

    Excellent
A signed limited edition serigraph by Arman, French (1929 - 2005) entitled "Symphonie Pastorale," is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left. Edition 98 from a series of 150.

The French Armand Pierre Fernandez, born in 1928, is one of the most important international object artists and a co-founder and member of the Nouveau Réalisme. He studied at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Nice from 1946 to 1949 and then continued his studies for two years at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris. An acquaintance with Yves Klein led to the idea of organizing joint happenings and events, which the two artists realized in 1953. Armand's neo-Dadaist 'Cachets' (stamp prints) of 1955, and later the 'Allures' (prints made with objects dipped into paint) and the 'Coupés' (cut-up objects) followed by the 'Colères' (objects which were smashed and then mounted) were still influenced by Kurt Schwitters. When the last letter of his name was accidentally forgotten on a catalogue cover in 1958, he decided to keep this spelling. The artist discovered his famous 'Poubelles', Plexiglas cases with rubbish cast in resin, at the beginning of the 1960s. From the 'Poubelles' Arman developed the so-called 'Accumulations', a number of the same objects assembled in show cases.

Together with Klein, Tinguely, Raysse and César, Arman is one of the most important artists of the Nouveau Réalisme. Since the 1950s he has been honored with numerous international exhibitions and has presented works twice at the documenta 3 and 6 in Kassel.

Arman is known for his work with cigars, violins, and paint brushes, this piece is an exemplary example of his work with violins.

#104 in Christophe Czwiklitzer-Les Affiches de Picasso.1956. Original lithograph in color, avant la lettre (before letters), printed by Mourlot in Paris and published for Palais de la Biennale in Menton, France. There is no number on this print. This is an overrun purchased directly from the printer. Extra copies are printed before and after above the number of prints made for the edition which are eventually signed and numbered by the artist. The prepress copies are made until the register and color meets the artists approval. The artist then will sign one copy as the BAT and usually initial it. BAT stands for 'bon a tirer' translated as OK to print. The extra copies remain property of the printer. These are quite rare and hard-to-find.

  13. Block Signed Salvador Dali Divine Comedy Series Envy Purgatory 15 Color Wood Engraving

Block Signed Salvador Dali Divine Comedy Series Envy Purgatory 15 Color Wood Engraving

    Pristine
A block signed framed color wood engraving by Salvador Dali entitled, "Envy." This piece is from Dali's Divine Comedy Series and is also referred to as "Purgatory 15, 'The blessed angel, whom we had reached by now, with a glad voice said, 'Here's the entrance; nor is this stair half as steep as the other two." Printed on Rives paper after a watercolor. Blindstamp of the editor, J. Estrade. Published by Les Editions d'Art Les Heures Claires, Paris.

The 101 wood engravings for the Divine Comedy Series were executed between 1951 and 1964. From 1951 to 1960, Dali painted the 101 watercolors, which would later be used as studies for the series of wood engravings. From 1960 to 1964, Raymond Jacquet created the 3,000 wood blocks that were necessary for the completion of the Divine Comedy Series with the participation and final approval of Dali for each of the 101 engravings.

Salvador Dali was born in May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Dalí became a leader of the surrealist movement. His painting, The Persistence of Memory, with the soft or melting watches is still considered one of the best-known surrealist works. As the war approached, the apolitical Dalí clashed with the surrealists and was "expelled" from the surrealist group during a "trial" in 1934. He did however, exhibit works in international surrealist exhibitions throughout the decade but by 1940, Dalí was moving into a new style that eventually became known as his "classic" period, demonstrating a preoccupation with science and religion. As an artist, Salvador Dalí was not limited to a particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. Dalí worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, and sculptures, jewels and objects of all descriptions. In 1974, Dalí opened the Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain. This was followed by retrospectives in Paris and London at the end of the decade. After the death of his wife, Gala, in 1982, Dalí's health began to fail. It deteriorated further after he was burned in a fire in his home in Pubol in 1984. Two years later, a pace-maker was implanted. Much of this part of his life was spent in seclusion, first in Pubol and later in his apartments at Torre Galatea, adjacent to the Teatro Museo. Salvador Dalí died on January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure with respiratory complications.

  16. Signed Charles Cobelle Along the River Goauche Painting

Signed Charles Cobelle Along the River Goauche Painting

    Very Good
Signed Charles Cobelle goauche painting entitled, "Along the River," is signed by the artist in black paint, lower right. This piece is in very good condition with minor creasing and staining around the edges.

Having studied at l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, it is no surprise the Charles Cobelle would enjoy success as one of the leading French artists during much of the twentieth century. The chic and sophisticated lifestyle associated with French culture was a subject commonly depicted by the artist, as he focused on capturing the magnificent light associated with Paris and the decadent architecture and styles that emerged from the European city. Studying under Marc Chagall and Raoul Dufy, Cobelle evokes a whimsical and dreamlike sense with his figures and structures often dancing on air through the space of his pictures.

Showcasing his penchant for all things French, the glamorous city of Paris takes center stage in his oil on canvas entitled "Along the River." Infusing bold and vibrant colors to bring this beautiful setting to life, Cobelle creates a magical setting that captures the elegant lifestyle that was associated with artistic center. The famous Notre Dame Cathedral stands proudly in the background behind a barrage of colorful buildings and one of the many bridges that overlook the famous river Seine. Beautifully placed in the foreground are elaborate statues and vases of flowers that enhance the magnificent elegance of this piece. Showcasing his masterful attention to detail, Cobelle uses loose and fluid strokes to bring every aspect of this painting to life and make the viewer feel as if they are in the setting basking in the wonderment that has long been found in the City of Lights.

  18. Signed Peter Max Zero Ceramic Cookie Jar

Signed Peter Max Zero Ceramic Cookie Jar

    Excellent
A ceramic cookie jar by Peter Max entitled "Zero." The piece features one of Peter Max's most used characters Zero, with a removable ceramic hat that is the lid to the cookie jar. These jars were created in 1989 and measure 8 ½ inches x 8 inches x 4 inches. This piece showcases an embossed signature of the artist within the ceramic.

From visionary pop artist of the 1960's, to master of dynamic neo Expressionism, Peter Max and his vibrant colors have become part of the fabric of contemporary American culture. In the 1960's Max rose to youthful prominence with his now-famous "Cosmic '60s" style, a bold linear type of painting which employed Fauvist use of color and depicted transcendental themes. Peter Max revolutionized art of the 60' just as the Beatles transformed the music of the decade. As his expressionistic style evolved, becoming more sensuous and painterly, Max' unique symbolism and vibrant color palette have continued to inspire new generations of Americans throughout the decades. Peter Max is a passionate environmentalist and defender of human and animal rights, often dedicating paintings and posters for these noteworthy causes. He has celebrated our nation's principles of freedom and democracy with his famous paintings of American icons of freedom including Lady Liberty and the American Flag. In 1981 he painted six liberty portraits for the America President and Mrs. Reagan, and in 1993, his famous '100 Clintons' installation. Max has painted for five American presidents; Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton.

Max has had approximately forty museum shows internationally, and more than fifty gallery shows worldwide. His works appear in the prominent collections of many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Signed Framed Giancarlo Impiglia Tennis Player Serigraph

    Excellent
A framed serigraph by Giancarlo Impiglia (Italian/American, 1940 - ), which is entitled "Tennis Player," features the contemporary art-deco style that Impiglia has made famous. It was printed in 1982 and is from an edition of 300.

Giancarlo Impiglia was born in Rome, Italy, on March 9, 1940. He studied at the "Liceo Artistico," (Artistic Lyceum), and at the 'Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma," (Academy of Fine Arts of Rome), where he specialized in murals and mosaics, under the direction of some of the major Italian postwar artists: Giuseppe Capogrossi, Giuho Turcato, Umberfo Mastroianni, Mario Mafai and others. Giancarlo Impiglia is widely recognized as one of the most influential artists of contemporary Art Deco style. By boldly combining hard-edged, abstract human figures with shimmering colors, Impiglia creates a kinetic vision that captures the rhythm of urban life. He juxtaposes static images with carefully planned and controlled geometric patterns, suggesting movement. This evocative imagery simultaneously conveys the joy, excitement, loneliness and sophistication of everyday life in a bustling metropolis. His figures are faceless. Personalities are defined only by sharply drawn profiles - a subtle commentary on the anonymity of city living.

A signed framed limited edition etching by John Baeder, American (1938 - ). John Baeder is well known for his photo-realist portraits of American diners and general Americana. This is piece that incorporates 1950s and 60s classic American.

John Baeder, born in South Bend, Ind., 1938, studied at Auburn University in Alabama. His subjects have been almost exclusively isolated roadside diners and eateries. John Baeder is one of the best known of the Photorealists. His popular paintings and prints of roadside diners so capture the pulse of America that his images have entered the secondary market as reproductions on posters, calendars, and postcards (here the energy comes full circle, as old postcards were an important source of inspiration for the paintings.) The Disney Company, Coca Cola, and fashion moguls Perry Ellis, Liz Claiborne, and Guess have appropriated them. The diners appear on memorabilia-oriented merchandise, such as painted plates, and in three dimensions as butter dishes, planters, canisters, etc. (part of an extensive ceramic line produced by Sigma/Towle in 1979 and 1980). Their appeal is so strong that the authors of a book based on the art deco style chose to illustrate the sleek design of New York City's Empire Diner with Baeder's highly expressive painting of that diner, rather than with an actual photograph. That an artist can concentrate so masterfully on one theme enticed Abrahams to publish "Diners by John Baeder" in 1978. Recently in November of 2007 another book of Baeder's paintings was published entitled " Pleasant Journeys and Good Eats Along the Way: The Paintings of John Baeder."

Photo-realist artwork such as Baeder's is a very time demanding artistic process and the style is one of the hottest today. This piece really captures a moment in time for our American history, and will bring great style to any space.

A pop art still life serigraph by Hunt Slonem entitled, "Anthurium." This is a great expression of Hunt Slonem's style. This limited edition is signed by the artist in pencil, lower right.

Called a Neo-Expressionist, Hunt Slonem inserts realism into his Abstract Expressionism. He combines Abstract Expressionist techniques with mysticism and animal subjects of Islam and Mexico. Born in Kittery Maine, he spent his childhood in various states including California, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Virginia and Washington because his father was in the Navy. During college, he lived in Mexico and Nicaragua, and these cultures much influenced his art. He studied art at Vanderbilt and Tulane and spent a summer at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 1972, he moved to New York and started using Nicaraguan holy cards as subject matter for his paintings. His oeuvre showcases many pieces of religious subject matter, in particular, depictions of Saints. In the 1980s, after three trips to India, his work became more formal and complex in composition. He started using hatch marks in 1988. He builds patterns of repeat images of the bird subject and paints them in recognizable settings such as cages. He also paints the human figure, some of them based on photos of Valentino. His work came on the avant-garde art scene when he moved to New York. There he did some huge, panoramic murals, including an 85-foot long frieze for the Bryant Park Grill. His focus is on the act of painting and he does not strive to convey a narrative message. He paints quickly, and often his colors are jarring. He is fascinated by the manipulation of paint. He usually begins by filling in a canvas with one color, then blocks in other hues, adds the animals or figures, and then the hatched scratch marks.

Signed Framed Ralph Goings Limited Edition Bulldozing International Lithograph

    Excellent
This is a beautiful framed lithograph by Ralph Goings entitled "Bulldozing International." Ralph Goings excels at photo-realism and brings classic American scenes to life. This lithograph was made in 1981 and is hand-signed by the artist in pencil, lower right and numbered in pencil, lower left.

Ralph Goings, American (1928 - ) paints pick-up trucks, franchised hamburger stands and California banks with the late model trucks gleaming arrogantly in the California sun. Next season they will be new only in the painting, in twenty years they will be perfect antique pickup trucks and their sentimental value will heighten. Hence the process of nostalgia. Goings proves again and again that the place or object, no matter how cold and stark, when vividly proclaimed within a short seasonal change, begets a larger meaning. It's a democratic triumph: all things become equal in both their power and vacuity.

As a photo realist Goings neither glorifies nor censures; but his objective rendering does often reveal the visual beauty and fascination of the pictorial subject. A hamburger stand may be one of the more typical symbols of our urban sprawl and convenience culture but, as Goings' paintings show, it may also be visually engaging precisely because of its synthetic qualities and the variety of texture, light play and reflections they afford. And it is this reflectiveness in our environment that offers us an incredibly fascinating and diverse array of visual entertainment. Goings and his fellow photo realists present us with visual truths: the object's presence is enough justification to make it a work of art.

This piece is truly an exceptional piece by Ralph Goings, photo-realism is one of the hottest styles of art currently and this is a stand out piece.

While at the academy he became a close friend of Karel Appel and co-founded the COBRA GROUP of artists, with Appel, Alechinksy, Jorn y Dubuffet, in 1948.

His early work was naturalistic, but after being inspired by the joie de vivre of French painters, and in particular by the work of younger artists such as Edouard Pignon, he slowly moved into the Cubist style. The poetic Corneille was strongly influenced by Miro and Klee. After the group dissolved in 1951 he moved to Paris and began collecting African art. These primitive artifacts became evident in his works, which began to take on a more imaginative style, like landscapes seen from a bird's eye view, exotic birds and stylized forms. Today Corneille lives and works in Paris, he makes visits to Israel where he works with the Jaffa Atelier. On 24 in September 2003 there was an opening of his exhibition of prints, in the Ramat-Gan Museum of Art, Israel.

Considered the founding member of the Op Art movement, Victor Vasarely built a reputation for creating pieces that infused bright and bold colors with a barrage of simple geometric figures that were repeated across the surface of each of his pieces. Enhancing many of his pieces was an experimentation of textures and shades that enhanced the technical yet loose nature of his style. In addition to infusing bright colors and intricate patterns, Vasarely experimented with a variety of materials that would help to create a complex setting for the viewer to interpret.

Although Vasarely was influenced by a variety of artists and styles, Cubism was predominantly seen in many of his pieces throughout the duration of his career, as seen in this untitled 1970 screenprint. Vasarely related to the Cubist idea that every object could be broken down to its natural geometric forms that could be used to translate every day objects to magnificent works of art. Framed within a small grey square, Vasarely created large, free flowing objects that overlap and intersect one another and help bring each object to life. Separating and enhancing each shape are the drastic differences between the pale pink and black that Vasarely used within the small setting.

Living in such a luxurious setting proved to be a great help to Dufy as he cultivated his penchant for the arts beginning at a young age. Between 1910 and 1912, Dufy moved to Paris and began traveling in the same circles as Picasso and Braque.

Many of Dufy's early works were done in the watercolor medium, which allowed him to showcase the hatching technique that he learned from Cezanne. Many of these watercolors used muted shades of vibrant colors to depict the beautiful landscapes and still life scenes that he created. This lithograph entitled "Venise, le Bassin de Saint-Marc," captures Dufy's love of coastal settings that were similar to the landscape that he grew up in and his use of bright hues that were dulled down in the process of creating his pieces. Venice would prove to be a favorite subject matter of the artist through out his career, showcasing the magnificent architecture and landscape of the Italian city.
